By taking the course online, there is the ability to support a family while working towards a qualification. However, this form of learning requires certain skills to be able to complete the degree successfully.
Setting and Sticking to a Study Plan
When opting for distance learning, the entire course is completed from home. There are very few tutorials and none of these are compulsory. This means that being able to set a study plan and then stick to it is extremely important. Some students choose to set a study plan each week as it is easier to plan for the short term; however, other students choose to set a study plan for the whole course and make changes along the way.
Having the Dedication
Part of setting the study plan is the ability to stick to that plan and this requires dedication. A student needs to have the dedication to work through the materials for the course each week and put in the level of study required to pass the degree successfully. This is also linked to motivation; there needs to be a reason for a student to complete the degree so he or she continues with the course, even when it becomes hard.
Avoid Distractions
There will be plenty of things to distract any student while studying. This may be friends going out for an evening or the prospect of family time. However, to be successful, a student needs to avoid these distractions to continue with the study plan. That does not mean forgoing all fun and family time but it means avoiding procrastination when it should be study time.
